Fur seal in a blizzard on South Georgia

At the height of the season hundreds of fur seals occupy the beaches and hillsides around the old whaling station of Grytviken. (About 95% of the world population breeds at the Island of South Georgia). These animals are fiercely intolerant of humans and will growl, charge and bully anyone who strays nearby (which made life rather difficult for those of us who had to live alongside them!). There was however one remarkably relaxed fur seal – known locally as 'Big Boy' – who has occupied the same beach-front territory at Grytviken for the past several years.
