Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) come to shore in mid-winter along the central California coast. This older bull had been displaced from the primary breading beach by younger stronger males defending their harems. His worn teeth and battle scared neck were a tribute to the years he had commanded prime real-estate.
