16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
This is a portrait of a rescued, orphaned elephant in Zimbabwe. Poaching is a serious problem with about one elephant being poached every fifteen minutes. At the beginning of the 20th century there were a few million African elephants but today there are around 450,000-700,000 African elephants, making them an endangered species. In 2011, over 23 tons of ivory was confiscated, which is equivalent to at least 2,500 elephants. With these photographs, I hope to make people more aware of the issues surrounding the environment.
