13th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Watching a mother bird perfrom a dance involving shrills, bluster, and feigned injuries demonstrated to me the power of a protective parent seeking to see the next generation endure. The eggs themselves were so camouflaged that an errant step would have crushed them, thus the pair of parents joined in the performance. I was fortunate to capture one in the midst of the distraction calls.
