12th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
California Condor soaring over the Big Sur coast.

Endangered California condors are making a comeback in Big Sur, California. Native Americans called them Thunderbirds. The largest of all North American birds, condors have a wing span of 8 to 9 feet. They are truly the giants of the coastline sky.
