15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
I'm an extremely slow diver and when I have my camera, I cover very little distance. On the lookout for special patterns and structures, I meticulously scan my environment. This is a macro shot of a part of a Plerogyra sinuosa, commonly known as bubble coral. It has grape-sized bubbles increasing their surface according to the amount of light available. At night, the bubbles are small and tentacles reach out to capture food.
