16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
On our second to last day in Botswana, we were asked if there was still an animal we wanted to see (with no guarantee that our guides could deliver). African Dogs, please, I replied immediately. That afternoon we quickly left one viewing site when the word came over the walkie talkie that a pack of African Dogs had been seen nearby. After 15 minutes of fast driving, we rounded a corner to behold a pack of African Dogs sprawled under a tree. They looked so sweet I almost forgot hearing how dangerous they could be. It was probably because I missed my little Corgi who was at home. Most of the dogs were asleep, but sometimes one would lift its head, gaze ahead at something and then flop down again. Their markings reminded me of someone who is wearing a plaid shirt, checked pants and a striped tie. It was so fun.
