16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest
A whale’s hump back

The humpback whales migrate every year to the warm waters of the Tongan Islands to calve and nurse their young. They can be seen from the shores as they pop in and out of the sea. I saw this incredible round shape emerge in front of our boat. I found it amazing.
