A girl washes her face

A girl washes her face near a living root bridge in the Khasi Hills in the Indian state of Meghalaya. The Khasi people who live there train the roots of a certain kind of fig tree to grow together and form living root bridges. This bridge is more than a century old. The Khasi People live in harmony with the forest, exploiting it but also protecting and conserving it.
