16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest
Light & dark
I snapped this photo shortly after sunrise in May 2017, skinning up Mt. Shasta on touring skis. The two figures at the top of are my two friends cresting a false summit around 12,500 feet, somewhere above Hidden Valley on the west face of the mountain. We summitted later that day and skied almost all the way back to our car, after an especially plentiful snow season.
