Kimono Girl with Souvenirs in the Rain
Passing by one of the many souvenir stands near the famed Fushimi-Inari temple in Kyoto, Japan on a rainy afternoon, I saw a woman in traditional dress contemplating the wares beneath a clear umbrella. The colors of her kimono echo those of the charms and masks for sale, connecting those images and making a visual point about the commoditization of cultural traditions and about modern reflections on heritage.
