14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
As we’re in a culture of circulation and no idea is original, according to Hito Steryl, "Instant" is an abstracted version of a painting that I've seen and enjoyed that is a part of our cultural visuality; anyone who sees it will recognize it immediately.
A painting as opposed to a photograph was used because unlike photographs, paintings need to be photographed by a professional and can only be found on museum websites but the way the public consumes them is through photographing them on a smartphone.
