15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Only in the month of August, about one thousand people this year had been rescued by Spanish authorities crossing from the coast of Africa to the coast of Barbate and Tarifa in Spain. This boat comes loaded with thirty or forty people, some of them babies or pregnant women who pay the mafia about a thousand dollars to cross in search of the promise land. Some make it, many die before touching land and others are rescued and sent back, but the rubber boat stays in our beaches and at times it is a common reminder of how difficult life can be.
