Dragonfly Molt

I found this molt while visiting our local arboretum, left behind by a newly-emerged dragonfly. When you get eye-level with it, the molt seems otherworldly and strange - like something out of a Giger print. The striations on the wood grain and the curling branches of something else feeding on the shedding make it appear even more fantastical, and slightly ominous. At first glance, the molt might appear hardy and stolid. However, even the slightest of breezes would send the molt scurrying across the ground. I thought it an apt metaphor: Though it is a struggle to be free of the "armor" you've enclosed your self in; its removal is necessary in order to evolve - and, when you look back at it, you'll find that the molt - the armor you'd left behind was not protective, held no strength, and really, was not armor at all.
