16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
untitled, Lower East Side, 2018
In this streetscape, the subject is both intrinsic to and alienated from the surrounding city. The ritualized activity of looking down at your phone is punctuated and made singular by the structures that frame the subject: a grid, a reflection, and an outstretched hand.
I like to think of the painted man on the left of the frame as summoning the centered subject to put down his phone.
