Through the eyes of George Washington's valet at Mount Vernon

I was privileged to interview the character actor who portrays Washington's valet, Christopher Sheels, as part of a special piece I did for Black History Month. Sheels was an enslaved servent in the household of Washington at Mount Vernon. Although he tried to escape during Washington's lifetime, he was present at Washington's death bed. Jonathon Wood, the character actor featured in these photos, brings great dignity and depth of character to the role.
