When visiting Hawaii, many people go straight to the beaches and the bars, but when I visited I really wanted to learn as much as I could about the indigenous culture that was present for millennium before the Europeans landed. A friend and I didn't have access to a car when there so we hitch hiked to this location on the south side of the big island. A sustainable travel project works to understand the local culture and leave the place better than we found it. To do this, we volunteered at a local community garden and helped set up their farmers market.
