15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
The eye of the beholder.
Somewhere between manifest and destiny...
Manifest : Clear or obvious to the eye or mind.
Destiny : The events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future.
By freezing time the photographer is able to sit in that fraction of a second for as long as he/she wants. Why that photo? Why this particular setting? Why this person? What led me to this place? What was I feeling? All these questions stand within that split second and the four corners of the frame. The best way I can describe street photography is somewhere between two places, manifest and destiny. Manifest, or our mind, heart, or soul's ability to comprehend persons, things, or situations colliding into one frame to tell the photographer's story. And destiny, whether or not we're able to be in the right place or the right time to witness it, the constant turning of street corners, or waiting until the lights and shadows are in the perfect position.
