Legacy Mine

Legacy mines are mines that have been reclaimed over 20 years ago. Many of these mines were reclaimed in a way that invasive species became extremely prevalent, and the compacted earth made it hard for any natural growth to happen. The AmeriCorps photographed in this picture works on Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative to till and break up the land of these legacy mines in order to plant new trees that are native to this area. In back is a D-6 bulldozer, which will do the initial combing, and later a larger bulldozer, a D-9 will come in to prepare the soil for the trees to be planted.
