Gold Nugget

The stark desert floor can be deceiving. This harsh and unforgiving land has a rich history in gold prospecting. America's West grew tremendously as a result of the gold rush. Quartzite, Arizona is home to many abandoned gold mines from the 19th century. The road from which this photograph was taken says it all. Gold Nugget Road. This was The American Experience of the 1800s.
