13th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
A construction worker removes badly corroded bolts from an intake tower standpipe. The intake tower is 120 feet tall, has an inner diameter of 13 feet and was constructed in the early 50's. The tower was in need of serious upgrades as the standpipe feeds the North Fork Water Treatment Plant that supplies water to 72% of the City of Asheville's residents.
