Ascending the Southeast Arete

The act of "Highball Bouldering," or the act of climbing massive, free-standing boulders unroped and unaided with any fall resulting in serious injury or death, has quietly become a pursuit for the bold within the rock climbing community. Nowhere else on earth is this dangerous art practiced more then in Bishop, California where, nestled at the sheer eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, house-sized juggernaut granite boulders abound. Climbers from across the world annually make the pilgrimage to the sleepy mountain town seeking the tall, aesthetic boulders to test themselves both mentally and physically. Here, a climber ascends an area classic, the Southeast Arete of Grandma Peabody Boulder in the Buttermilks.
