15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
America

Every year the American national guard military members take two weeks off from their civilian lives and train in their specialty. I have been following one such unit. The 246th Army National Guard band of South Carolina. They spend two weeks practicing and giving free concerts around the state. The concert on the USS Yorktown seemed a perfect place to capture the past, present and future of the American soldier.
