New Mexico is home to an estimated 400 ghost towns and abandoned settlements. Most were abandoned due to a lack of water or because they didn't have the ability to sustain themselves after the railroads moved away. The ghost towns of New Mexico represent both the folly and high water mark of Manifest Destiny.
