Was the tree watching me? winking? keeping away the evil eye? I saw it (and it saw me) on my way to the Grand Masters Palace.
Theatre-goers have walked this aisle for over 1,800 years and, until very recently, this theatre dating from 155 was still in use for performances. That's seriously good construction and design.
Torajan funerals are elaborate community events. I'm told that they believe the soul of the deceased goes to the beyond with that of the water buffalo and that this was his grandmother's funeral.

Funerals in Toraja are very elaborate community events. This photo was taken on the third day of a funeral. Every part of the sacrificed water buffalo is used.
Sa'dan is a village known for weaving. The process is time-consuming, with many steps, done by women who envision and create very elaborate designs. One step is spinning.

I met this man as I arrived in the village of Tanjung Selor after an hour-and-a-half trip by boat up the Kayan River. He an others there gave us a warm welcome.
I was visiting a home in one of the villages built on the water, her neighborhood. The villages are fascinating, an entire city built over water and homes that have been in the family for generations.
