Mourning Amalia Dainesi Porcheddu, 1902, after Rubino

I photographed these women on a cloudy, drizzly day in the monumental cemetery of Turin in November 2017. Amalia died at 39; Rubino used two models for the mourners, each twice. He and Leonardo Bistolfi were witnesses together at the wedding of one of Amalia’s children a few years later.
