Hamburg’s HafenCity is currently Europe’s largest inner-city development project. Serving this newly created area is the new subway station HafenCity. Opened in 2012, it was designed to establish associative connections with the port activities. The interior is entirely cladded with stainless steel to reminiscence the hull of ships. Above the platform, a row of shipping container size glass light boxes, each equipped with distinct lighting systems. Seagull screams and harbor noises are heard at the entrances and stairs of the station, and every hour music by Bach, Verdi or Brahms is played to the beat of a colorful light show as the glass containers light up in 280 colored LEDs.
