15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
I took a backpacking trip through Yosemite
which proved to be far more difficult than
expected. After 18 hours of driving, 3 hours
in stand still traffic, sliding off the road into
a tree, and trailblazing 5.5 miles, in the middle of a snowstorm, through 5" of fresh snow, with a 40lb pack, arrived at Dewey point with zero visibility. We camped out
for the night, Slept in our wet clothes in
13 degree temperatures and woke the next morning to see the sun peaking through the clouds. It was absolutely beautiful and such a relief to see the sun. When we eventually returned to the ranger station, the park had been cleared out for flooding, so we were the only ones on the mountain.
