16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
This piece is part of a larger body of work titled Coping in Paint. The work discusses ways to cope with a divorce within families. I photographed those around me who also experienced a divorce in some way. By doing this I was able to illustrate common coping mechanisms that I shared with these individuals. This photograph specifically touches upon playing instruments or listening to music in order to relieve emotions. The colors represent my mom, dad, and myself. Blue being my dad, myself in yellow, and my mom in red. The red overpowers both colors in the image to symbolize my mom's strength and power in overcoming the divorce. Growing up, both of my parents regularly put me in the middle of arguments and situations which is why I place yellow between blue and red. I represent myself in yellow to symbolize my optimism gained during this experience.
