16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
This native New Zealand foliage was captured in the Catlins in South Otago while walking with my sister and dog Hester. The image is a metaphor for the neural pathways that we all have. Our family witnessed the insidious and progressive cognitive decline and deterioration as Alzheimer’s Disease infiltrated her neural pathways and despite our attachment and love for her we were unable to halt this process. These delicate strains of branch, web, contour and are reminiscent of the brain and its sulcus, fissures and miraculous workings.
