The Skokie Heritage Museum houses locally-significant historical photos, documents, and artifacts in the historic Engine House (the Skokie Fire Department's home from 1887 to 1969). The museum also features the oldest extant structure in Skokie, the Meyer family cabin, built in 1847. These two sites have much to offer including permanent and temporary exhibits, special interest classes, and educational school programs. The museum is open free to the public Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 PM and by appointment.

Exhibits

The Skokie Heritage Museum features a permanent exhibit on the history of the Skokie Fire Department and a temporary exhibit titled "Fun and Games: Recreating in Skokie" which features a selection of historical recreational activities in Skokie. The historical log cabin exterior will be viewable.

For Museum Day, the museum will open early at 10 AM. The "Fun and Games" exhibit will close at 1 PM. From 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the local Devonshire Playhouse group will be performing Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting play on the grounds outside the museum. More information and purchasable tickets are available online at https://www.skokieparks.org/events/outdoor-play-tuck-everlasting21/.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
