The Portland Chinatown Museum opened in December 2018 and is devoted to collecting, preserving, and interpreting for the general public the stories of Portland’s two historic Chinatowns. Our work and our museum focus on Chinatown as a collection of historic buildings and as a meaningful geography of work, play, and memory. We focus on the histories of place, peoples, and the community’s rich cultural traditions as part of the fabric of Portland. Our mission is to honor Portland Chinatown's past, celebrate its present, and help to create its future.

Exhibits

Our permanent exhibit, Beyond the Gate: A Tale of Two Chinatowns, tells the early Chinese immigrants stories and their contributions to Portland and to Oregon. Our front two galleries are devoted to Asian American artists in all mediums. The current art exhibit is A World Transformed, with Carey Wong. Carey was the set designer for Beyond the Gate. He is also a professional set designer for world class stage plays and stage operas. He presents a collection of miniature stage sets that he designed in his 40-year professional career.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
