National D-Day Memorial
3 Overlord Circle, Bedford, VA 24523 - United States
Located in Bedford, VA, the community that experienced America's highest per capita losses on D-Day, the National D-Day Memorial Foundation exists to preserve the lessons and legacies of Allied Forces in the invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944. The fifty-acre site takes the visitor through a chronological survey of the planning, implementation, and aftermath of Operation Overlord, the largest land-sea-air invasion of the war, giving Allies a path to victory over Nazi Germany.
Outdoor sculptures, interpretive plaques, and a haunting beach tableau help to tell the story of what happened on D-Day.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
