This was the site of the first Missouri state capitol from 1821-1826. The site consists of the Senate, House of Representatives, committee room, governor's office, trading post and period residence of the men who built the buildings in 1818-1819. All of the rooms are furnished with period artifacts and topics discussed by interpreters. These include Missouri's road to statehood, the Missouri Compromise, bartering and trading, early Missouri history and the people and business that made this an incredible historic place.

Exhibits

The historic site consists of the capitol building itself, an interpretive center with small gift shop and two rooms of exhibits. The interpretive center is free. Tours are offered on the hour, starting at 10 a.m. and the last one leaving at 3 p.m. on Sept. 17. Fees are waived on Sept. 17 in honor of Museum Day.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
