James G. Barber is a historian and curator at the National Portrait Gallery. His research interests include portraiture of the Jacksonian and Civil War eras, and the American presidency. His publications include: Theodore Roosevelt: Icon of the American Century; George C. Marshall: Soldier of Peace, Andrew Jackson: A Portrait Study and Faces of Discord: The Civil War at the National Portrait Gallery.
