Climbing the Energy-recycling Assistive Stairs

(0:31)

Each stair is tethered by springs and equipped with pressure sensors. When descending, each step slowly sinks until it locks into place, storing the energy generated by the user. On the way back up, the lower step unlatches, releasing the stored energy in the spring to gently assist the foot to the next step. Credit: Georgia Tech
