I wish many of our physicians would take this view. When dealing with my patients I try to make them understand that their health is their own responsibility. I like Jay Parkinsons approach that it should be made into a positive choice as opposed to a negative rule. Much of my work is with chronically stressed individuals and I am finding that simple steps like laughter therapy (I actually tell them to go and watch TV programmes and do things that make them laugh and take part in enjoyable exercise classes) have incredibly positive effects on them that in many cases their reliance on medication/ counselling/ Drs. visits etc decreases. Health care should be about empowering patients and encouragment rather than the old values of prescription and rules. Thank you Jay.
