I also believe the duct created lift itself. Because of the rounded edge around the top, as air passed over the edge and down into the rotors the edge acted as a circular wing of sorts providing some lift.

I seriously lament the fact someone has not mass produced this simple device for urban populations. Oddly, people have tried duplicating this but they can't seem to come up with what Hiller produced those many years ago. That guy was a genius, even building a small helicopter while in High School.
