S. L. Clemmons was a truly great man and there is something of a sad foreboding here because it was on Christmas eve, 1909 that Jean died. Clara was the only daughter that survived the beloved Twain. If you want your heart ripped from your chest, read Twain's The Death of Jean, 13 pgs and his word smithing was never more powerful, unless of course you know of editor, Bernard de Voto requesting that Letters from the Earth be with held until after the death of Clara. B.de Voto feared a fundamentalist backlash that may have drug Clara into a web that may have impairled her safety. Twain had also said that these 56 pages would never be published, "It would be a felony." Thanks, Smithsonian, for the mini squint at a very great man.
