Maybe the failure of the Aerocar was because it was something akin to that novel tool, a combination pliers and screwdriver. It is neither a good pair of pliers nor a good screwdriver.

I had the rare privilege of seeing an Aerocar drive and fly while I worked at the airport in Auburn CA. There was even a news story about it..

Thanks for your always-informative and entertaining posts. I never knew Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was real. Maybe this is what inspired Ian Fleming!

I was an adult in 1957 but never heard of this. So glad to know and I am sending the article to friends and family comprising three generaions. I can visualize a great
cartoon of this machine in the midst of todays air traffic.

I always thought it would be nice to be able to fly/drive. After observing my fellow travelers I've decided that it would be mostly suicidal to allow most to leave the ground. One would have strangers"dropping" in uninvited.

Most awesome. We all (higher brained individuals) should have this as our daily choice of transport depending on our needs.

I was in my teens living in Longview when the Aerocar made for some real excitement. It got off the ground but not as it should have. It should be "coming and going" all over today.

I was living in Longview at the time, a junior at R.A. Long High School. The Aerocar was fascinating to me and I have always wondered why it never "got off the ground" any better (or more) than it did.
