A ladle of thin soup, a piece of bread and a handful of hazelnuts is what these grown men got to eat! A shattering document by Cartier-Bresson.The Lincoln Brigade, American volunteers fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War, almost without weapons, equipment or food. Pure idealism and generosity which would be impossible these days.

This is fantastic and Cartier-Bresson has captured something here that the world needs to know. Apart from the famous painting of Guernica and the writings of Ortega y Gassett most of the world does not know about the brave people in Spain who took part in the fight against Fascism and Nazism that threatened Spain's existence. Of course, Franco played both the Allied and the Axis powers against each other to his benefit and many think Spain was not "involved" in WWII, but that is simply not true. This film provides support to think so.
Thank you Smithsonian.
