They have been trained for about 3 years before to fight in the arena; The death rate was less than 10%.. What the movies are promoting is a misrepresentation of those events. Every succesful gladiator had the right to become a free man. The wooden gladius was the official symbol he can get from his master to gain his freedom back.

Having attended the only gladiatorial school since the fall of the RomanEmpire,at Rome, I concur with this video. Trainig was grueling but the adrenalin rush when you enter the arena is un describable. The closest thing to real combat since my military days. Although you know that you are not going to die, you could get seriously injured. i liked this video. Since my participation in gladiator school I have joined a Roman re enactment group and I train the gladiators for performances before crowd that aadore the spectacle. I have a full "Ludus" in my ranch here in LA.

Summary for the deaf:
Gladiators lived most of their time leading to the games in the ludus (sp?). They train day in and day out with the wood swords to develop stamina and needed muscles.
Gladiators had the best medicine and diets of anyone in that day as they were stars.
They ate a lot of grains to make themselves bulky.. kinda chubby.. to protect their organs from sword blows.
