The arts have always played a prominent role in the cultural development of Alabama, and it is the diversity of these offerings that make the state so unique. The Birmingham Museum of Art is the largest municipal museum in the southeast and has a collection of over 20,000 objects from ancient to modern times, including the most extensive collection of Wedgwood collection outside England.
For art with a human touch, visitors should visit the famed town of Gee's Bend, where generations of quilters have elevated this humble craft to a decidedly artistic way of life. In addition, every year the Alabama Folk Art Exhibition is held to honor the many folk artists that hail from the state, including Mose Tolliver, Bill Traylor and Thornton Dial, as well as plenty of potters, basket weavers, and textile artisans who welcome the chance to show their skill to the public.
