The Indianapolis Museum of Art exhibits American, Asian, European and African art, as well as contemporary works, textiles and photographs. The museum also owns the historic mansion Oldfields, once the home of Indianapolis businessman J.K. Lilly Jr. The house, which holds art and antiques, is surrounded by 26 acres of formal gardens.

In Bloomington, the Indiana University Art Museum, has a complete set of Marcel Duchamp’s "Readymades." The 13 items include Bicycle Wheel and the infamous Fountain. At the University of Notre Dame, near South Bend, the Snite Museum of Art owns works by John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, Georgia O'Keeffe, Sean Scully, Joseph Cornell and Alexander Calder. Ball State University, in Muncie, owns almost 11,000 works of art and decorative objects, including impressionist paintings by Edgar Degas, Childe Hassam and Jean-Francois Millet. The Ball State Museum of Art also dedicates gallery space to the Hoosier Group, late 19th century painters who settled in Indiana to paint its rolling landscape.
