A diverse Midwestern state with a multi-ethnic population, Illinois encompasses industry and agriculture, the country’s third-largest metropolis and old-fashioned small towns. In much of the state, vineyards, historic towns, Amish farms and picturesque forests offer a break from the bustle of modern life. Many of the state’s can’t-miss sites, however, are in Chicago.

Chicago is the third largest metropolitan area in the United States, and the city and its suburbs are home to the majority of Illinois’ population. At the country’s center, it is a transportation hub, home to bustling railroads and the country’s busiest airport. A city of great architecture, Chicago boasts the tallest building in North America, and its leafy suburbs hold a trove of Frank Lloyd Wright houses.
