Cellphones, homeland security, DVDs, iPods, a computer at every desk, space shuttles, HIV, "American Idol," ATMs, the Soviet Union's collapse, international terrorism, designer water, electric cars—on the whole, the world in which we live today is quite different from just 40 years ago, when Smithsonian first appeared.
As we begin to mark the magazine’s 40th anniversary, we would like to ask: If you were pressed to name the five most important events, ideas or developments in the past 40 years, what would they be?
To stimulate conversation, I offer the following list. It is, admittedly, biased toward the United States, and despite efforts not to emphasize recent times it does have a decidedly 21st-century tilt.

Definitely 9/11. The Internet. Fall of the Berlin Wall. The fall of apartheid in South Africa. The election of Barrack Obama.
Posted by Laura Miller on May 10,2010 | 07:20AM
5. Creation of the WWW. I'm not sure you can track this down to a single moment, but the creation of the internet impacted the world in an immeasurable way.
4. Oklahoma City Bombing. It's one of those "I remember where I was" moments (alone, separated from a school group in DC - not the best moment to get lost...)
3. Watergate - it changed politics forever creating a generation of cynicism.
2. The Challenger explosion. Because Christy McAuliffe was aboard, they showed the launch at school. I was very young, but remember everyone being quiet and sad.
1. 9/11 - That day changed all of us.

The election of Barack Obama? Seriously? How can you be so short sighted? The only thing so far he should be noted for is the first African American President and a Nobel prize he didn't earn nor deserve. Other than that its all talk. You are a HISTORIAN, please pretend to behave like one.

-the internet: after the ability to communicate and share information so seamlessly was created, how could we ever return to our pre-web lives?
-the Challenger Accident: I was a child in a school that was going to participate in the lessons from orbit and we all watched as those brave astronauts- and each an educator for that mission- lost their lives.
-the Clinton Sex Scandal- really, do we need to dissect what oral sex is...and with the President of the United States?
-Hurricane Katrina: watching one of our greatest historical cities nearly lost, but reborn because of the soul of it's citizens. And, I live in Houston, so the displaced citizens are near and dear to us in this area.
-9/11: the end of a way of life we had all become accustomed to and taken for granted and the event that exposed to us how much of the world really felt about America.

1. 911 - The single biggest attack on America's peaceful existence. The difference between New York that day and Pearl Harbour was the death of innocent people from all over the world.
2. Oklahoma City Bombing - this one came from within - people bent on causing chaos by killing their own people.
3. 1976 Gas Shortage - the first indication that we as a country, rely far too much on black gold.
4. Public access to Non-Wireline Phones - Late 1983 is when cell phones became a possibility for the public - even though cell phones were invented in 1960 - they didn't boom until then - and now people can't think of a world without them.
5.Late 1971 - Ray Tomlinson sends the first email.

Sorry, I can't agree with all of your top five events as they do focus on the US. My picks are ...
1. The Internet changing freedom of speech worldwide
2. The invention of the mobile phone leapfrogging communication technology in non-industrialized and industrialized nations worldwide
3. The invention of the PC redefining how we work worldwide
4. Hybrid seeds - exponentially improving crop yields and saving 100's of millions of lives from starvation.
5. The rise of terrorism worldwide almost exclusively from muslim extremists hijacking a peaceful religion.
The genome is at it's infancy. What comes of the initial efforts will not be seen in earnest for 15-20 years. Clean air and water act is good for the US but has not been followed worldwide. President Obama is in the process of bankrupting the country. His actions as President will make him a one-term President ... and we still have a long way to go with bigotry in this country and worldwide.

Computers have to be #1. Even though they have been around more than 40 years but the accessibility and the shear magnitude of them. I worked in the 60's without them, saw the evolution and now you can't do hardly anything without them.
#2 DNA (human genome) not only in helping human kind, but also in solving crimes and tracing our history
#3 you might not think of it as much but sunscreen. Even though it was invented in 1938, its popularity has only been in the past 30 years.
#4 The terrorist attacks, 9-11. I grew up with worry of someone hitting the ‘red’ button and starting a nuclear attack. Terrorist are more frightening.

I don't know the years but here is my list of top 5 most important events in the last 40 years.
1. The Civil Right Act. Not quite sure this makes the 40 year cut, but making all American's equal under law was by far the best thing for America. While the Declaration of Independence stated “all men are created equal,” they really were not until the Civil Rights Act. The color of your skin determined what rights you had.
2. The personal computer. While the computer has been around for a long time it was never imagined that every person in the world would be able to afford their own, let alone take it with them where ever they go.
3. 24 hour news. Can't say if this is a good or bad thing but 24 hour news has changed the world. We now know more about anything and everything than we ever needed or wanted to know before.
4. The war in Iraq. For the first time in American history the U.S. population does not support our troops nor to they show the same level of patriotism and love of country that had been seen in every other war fought by U.S. Troops.
5. The Green Movement. Looking to the future and knowing what we do now will impact future generations is a good thing. Looking for more sustainable energy, reducing the amount of waste and recycling everyday items into alternative items is a good thing. Wish we had thought of this 40 year ago : )

2. Worldwide web. It has completely changed the way that we access information.
3. The demise of network television. Between cable TV, satellite TV, and "reality" ridiculousness, television networks are no longer relevant.
4. Where did the music go? There are no pop hits or shareable songs anymore. Rap and yelling make up the majority of air-play and attention for a wide age-spectrum. Who parents in the 1970s have believed that things would so deteriorate from those offerings!?
5. Cell phones. Because this list didn't stipulate that the developments had to be positive. Yuk!

Posted by Gary Doyle on May 12,2010 | 01:07PM
Election of Obama - another nail in the coffin of narrow mindedness and a breath of fresh air. He really does tell the truth - not a common trait in a politician.
9/11 - a tragedy
Gore vs Bush - another tragedy. Bush and Cheney severely damaged our country and its values. Lied to us, abused our privacy, squandered our money, insulted the rest of the world, created an enemy of all muslims, and made sure that the income gap in our country widened. Perhaps this was the greater tragedy than 9/11. Oh, and did I say, made a mockery of science.
Human Genome Project - starting a wondrous exploration into the nature of life on this planet
Hubble Space Telescope and the other scopes that have changed our view of the universe I will add one more: the promise of the Large Hadron Collider. What a gal!

In 1972 the Equal Pay Act was ammended to include professional jobs, and for the first time in american history the white-collar, executive working women and mothers were legally supposed to earn as much money as their male counterparts, even as CEOs--the management workforce in 1970 was 10% women (and mostly in fields related to women)...today the management workforce is pretty evenly split along gender lines.
In 1973 the creation of the GPS system, changed navigation for everyone from everyday people in cars to boats of all kinds, trains, planes, and rockets. Now in cellular phone have GPS capability that puts city and even Mt. Everest maps in users' hands.

In no particular order: The impeachment trial of President Clinton was a lesson in politics and history. The resignation of President Nixon demonstrated the need for and the power of a free press. The internet has influenced all of our lives in too many ways to numerate here. September 11 is forever ingrained in our national and global psyche, and the events of that day continue to impact our daily lives. I watched Elison Onizuka's funeral on TV. He and his explorers aboard the Challenger took a little bit of all of us that day. The Mars Explorer Program, the Hubble, the Cassini, and the International Space Station all illustrate on of mankinds best qualities; the search for knowledge.

1. African Americans and others of 'color' or ethnicity gaining more and better access to parts and participation in the media (news programs, stage, screen and television, etc.); 2. Innovations in computer and information technology and access to the internet for all; 3. Discoveries and innovations in medicine and all fields of science which allow people to live longer, have better access to food, etc.; 4. Globalization, and the melding and sharing of ideas and education throughout the globe for the improvement of lifestyles of those in third-world countries. 5. What's not necessarily so good for the world has been the acceleration of the split between the rich and the poor and the takeover of governments, including this one, by corporations and special interest groups and the seeping corruption this has caused.

Development of the World Wide Web -- the internet has not only changed the way we research things, but for better or for worse has created a society of low attention span humans. We need immediate gratification and can get it. We can find answers to what ails us, but we can also watch whatever movie we want if we can wait for the stolen download. I am not sure the generation we are raising us will survive a power outage. Hopefully they will be intelligent enough to fix the issue. On a positive note, I know that I can send anyone anything from anywhere, literally.
deciphering the human genome -- This has changed the way we police ourselves. Also how we track our geneology. I love the shows on NBS and PBS about geneology.
Rolling Stones? I am guessing? What band actuated the trend of selling concert tickets from one hub like Ticketmaster? This doesn't make the top 5 but in honor of the arts...I need to research and get back to you...
That same vein, Anerican Idol -- has changed the blueprint of starting a band, playing locally and forming a fan base, then touring locally out of a car (like I did), only to have some random record executive like what you are doing, and give you a record deal. Then you still need to pound the pavement with promotion, this still doesn't give you the exposure that American Idol does. (Thank you, AI, for Carrie Underwood!)
I know I am repeating what you have already exampled, but these are my votes.
Still Thinking,
Laura Shadle
