The Reindeer’s Super Vision

Humans cannot perceive ultraviolet light, but it’s still dangerous—UV light causes sunburn, cancer, even blindness. Reindeer, however, are different. Unlike in a human eye, where UV light is blocked by the lens, in a reindeer eye, UV light passes straight through the lens and cornea to the retina. There, researchers have found, the UV light sets off electrical signals in the brain, indicating that reindeer are indeed seeing this light. Why would they need to? In a snowy Arctic where everything appears white to a human, UV vision likely allows reindeer to see a more detailed landscape, including the lichen they eat and the wolves from which they flee.
