The Mimic Octopus’ Expert Camouflage

Mystique—the blue-skinned, red-haired character from the X-Men comics—can change her appearance and pretend to be any other human on earth. The mimic octopus, in contrast, pretends to be other species. This striped cephalopod, which lives in waters off Indonesia and Northern Queensland, Australia, will contort its body, rearrange its arms, change its color and alter its movements to impersonate predators. Scientists have documented the octopus pretending to be more than a dozen different species, including jellyfish, sea snakes, giant crabs and flatfish.
