The Rise and Fall and Rise of the Chemistry Set
Banning toys with dangerous acids was a good idea, but was the price a couple generations of scientists?

The 1980s brought a new set of societal problems—AIDS, Chernobyl, the ozone hole—but people now looked again to science for solutions. The chemistry set reemerged, though dramatically changed. There were fewer chemicals, or no chemicals, and safety was a priority.
Michelle Francl, a theoretical chemist at Bryn Mawr College, wonders whether that emphasis on safety may actually be making young scientists less safe. “I get students who I can’t get to wear eye protection in the lab or closed-toe shoes,” she says. “We let kids play soccer, play football, ride bikes, all of which are inherently more dangerous than most of the things they could do with a chemistry set.”
The worst that happened during Francl’s own young adventures in home chemistry was when her brother lost an eyebrow, and that wasn’t even related to a chemistry set experiment. “We had one very memorable explosion, which we managed to keep from my mother,” Francl recalls. The pair had scrounged the equipment to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water. Their instructions recommended testing for the presence of hydrogen with a glowing ember—luckily, they were working in a makeshift basement lab where there was nothing flammable. “It didn’t make a big mess. There was just a big poof,” she says.
In an era of helicopter parenting, risk aversion and litigation—not to mention the rise of meth labs across the country—it might seem that even the neutered chemistry set is doomed to another death.
But the 21st century has also seen a new host of problems for science to solve, including how to provide food, water and power to a global population that will pass ten billion by 2100. Government and business leaders are putting renewed emphasis on science education. And the chemistry set has seen a bit of a resurgence. Educational toy retailer Discover This reported strong sales of chemistry sets during last year’s Christmas season, anchored by a revamped line of traditional chemistry sets from Thames & Kosmos. Cook says that the sets are very similar to the Chemcraft and Gilbert sets of the early 20th century but may be even better for learning science. They are sold in four steps of kits of increasing difficulty that encourage learning the basics before moving on to harder tasks. Cook raved about the manuals: “Not only do they tell you what you’re learning and break it into types of experiments, [but also] they tell you the history behind the discovery,” as well as how to dispose of experiments, “which is really helpful today, because you can’t just dump things down the drain.”
But the reality is that a traditional chemistry set is probably no longer necessary for performing chemistry at home. Books and manuals are readily available and equipment and chemicals can be bought online or scrounged from around the house, like Francl did when she was young. And while safety should be a concern, parents should recognize that most home chemistry accidents happen not from kids mixing chemicals in the basement but from adults mixing cleaning supplies upstairs. “The things that kill people, if you look at the accidents in homes, are people mixing bleach with everything from ammonia to pesticides,” Francl says.
Home experimentation has inspired scientists and inventors for years, and it would be a shame if concerns about safety stopped budding chemists from getting a start. “I would encourage parents to let their kids be a little risky and let them try things where it might be complicated to work,” Francl says. And, “Be patient with the mess.”

I had a Kosmos chemistry set when I was a kid. I loved it but my father had removed the potassium ferrocyanide bottle probably because he read the label and it worried him. He obviously did not realize the stuff is non toxic and did not want to risk it. I asked him about it recently but did does not remember any of it. At the age of 12 I was determined to do ALL the experiments so I went on trying to find the missing ferrocyanide. This led me to various photography stores and was a start of a beautiful friendship between me and photography. I got the stuff and did all the experiments. In time I went to MIT and got my chemistry degree and then on to graduate school. All this because my interest in science was sparked at a young age. Was it worth the risk? It was to me even though I did some really dumb things in my time. No risk means no reward but today if my child wants to do any of this I will do the experiments with them to both teach them and be sure they are safe.

I had both chemistry sets (Gilbert & Chemcraft) and the atomic energy lab as a child. A friend of the family was chair of the chemistry department at the nearby University of Nebraska, so I was able to get other chemicals I wanted. Yes, I made simple fireworks and bad smells, etc. The only really toxic compounds I recall were sodium chromate and cobalt chloride, the latter as a 3-5% mixture with salt to make it safer. There was an alcohol lamp and some diluted acids included. I became a biologist, taught biochemistry, and am now a prebiotic chemist and astrobiologist, though semi-retired.

This author of this article is aware the children's chemistry sets (and biology, and physics, etc.) are still sold everywhere, right? There's more stuff available now than ever. I homeschool my kids and we've worked our way through several different chemistry sets.

I love chemistry. My start began with my younger brother's chemistry kit which I rather dominated. It led me to read college level general chemistry text in junior high school and eventually to become a chemical engineer. I freely admit to my share of explosions, cindered hair, etc. A bomb explosive expert told me that a chemistry set was also set him in the direction of his occupation. You try to make explosive and other mischief early on and as you mature you do your utmost to avoid them while doing more sophisticated experiments.

My father was a chemical engineer. When I was a kid I had the chemistry set he had had as a child, followed by a newer one. Neither contained an alcohol lamp or anything flammable or toxic that I can recall. The vast majority of the chemicals were salts that were about as toxic as hard water scale (in fact, I remember making bath salts--no, not the designer drug that has been making the rounds lately). And as I recall, the experiments were not terribly exciting. While in grade school, I discovered "The Golden Book Of Chemistry Experiments" in the school library. This was full of all sorts of "neat stuff", much of which involved the use of extremely toxic chemicals (notably acids and carbon tetrachloride). My parents would not let me try any of those experiments or provide the ingredients, but my father did bring home all sorts of fun items from work, including various heavy metal salts, which I used to electroplate things (under close supervision). Later experiments in attempting to build rockets leave me grateful that my parents and my best friend's parent had no idea what we were doing in their basement. We did after any number of false starts get a rocket off the ground. Most just caught fire. Thankfully, nothing we messed around with ever exploded. I never had any great aptitude for chemistry, and so that "phase" went by the wayside and my life and career took a very different direction. I still have the copy of "The Golden Book Of Chemistry Experiments" that my parents bought me after much pleading. Not long ago I discovered that it has become something of a collector's item amid rumors that it was "banned", as it no longer exists in the vast majority of libraries. More likely, the Golden Book bindings have simply fallen apart after more than 50 years. Amusing, really, to think that 50 years ago children were trusted with sharp objects, alcohol lamps, and toxic chemicals. And they're all still here, too. There may be a lesson there.

I got my first chemistry set when I was eight. Made face cream for my girl friend next door. We also did dancing mothballs. One of the chemicals called for in some of the last experiments was something called urine. I didn't know what it was. I went down to McDonalds drug store where I bought other stuff like sulphur. I asked Mrs. McDonald for some u-reen. I remember her laughing politely and saying they didn't have any. I also remember sitting on Santa Claus lap at Sears in Baton Rouge and asking for some big test tubes, a retort and some Florence and Erlenmeyer flasks...he didn't have those either. Real fun came along later when I learned how to make gunpowder. I moved on to model rockets. I was definitely inspired by my experimentation. Became an Electrical Engineer....still am.

I got my start in chemistry at age 6 from a chemistry set given to my parents for my use by a local school teacher who knew of my keen interest in science. Over the years, until I graduated from high school, I kept adding to the collection with sophisticated glassware and chemicals. Some of the glassware I made myself. It was a great introduction to science. When I had kids of my own, I was disappointed to learn that chemistry sets were no longer for sale.

We need wholesale tort reform and with it a wholesale reform of our society's attitudes on personal responsibility. Scientists need to re-examine their political prejudices and vote for candidates who will bring those reforms about.

The chemistry sets of the 1950s didn't contain sodium cyanide, which WOULD have been excessively dangerous for young chemists. The only cyanide in these sets was potassium ferrocyanide (non-toxic). The sets did contain a spinthariscope, with a small amount of radium (as in the watch dials of that time). More dangerous chemicals were abundantly available to young teen chemists from the corner drug store or from chemical supply stores found in some cities.

careful citizens, only corporations can safely use chemicals without endangering you or the environment... our scientists come from other countries where children grow up exposed to education, not safety lectures... but those scientists stay in their own countries where the work is now... pay attention to the election carnival, people, watch closely as whoever gets elected, nothing is going to change as you hoped it would...

Yeah, I remember my Gilbert chemistry set -- and my disappointment when I looked at one for my own kids. Nothing more reactive than baking soda and vinegar. I could hardly contain my excitement (not). The lawyers win again...

I will never forget the Christmas my parents got my brother not only a chemistry set - but also the human body showing the internal organs. I, ME, wanted a chemistry set but I guess in the 50's girls didn't get those things. To this day I wonder if my life would have been different if I had been the one who got the chemistry set. I was always the curious smarter one.... My brother never even opened it or paid much attention to the human body model. Childhood memories. I'm glad to know the Smithsonian is taking care of them.
