Smithsonian's 2012 Award Winners

We polled the brain trust of the Smithsonian to identify the most innovative individuals working in America today. To make sure we were skating on the cutting edge, we asked for candidates who had achieved a breakthrough that was influential and recent – ideally within the past year. The Smithsonian American Ingenuity Awards shed light on brilliant new achievements in science, technology, art and society. The nine winners will be presented trophies designed by architect Thom Mayne at a special ceremony on November 28 here in Washington, D.C.
